Dr. Robert M. Malow – Professor, Health Promotion and Disease Prevention

The RSCPHSW lost one of its true giants when Dr. Robert Malow passed away on February 18, 2013 from cancer.

malowDr. Malow received his PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1980, and joined FIU’s Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work in 2001. He was a Professor in the Department of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention and the director of FIU’s AIDS Prevention Program. The AIDS Prevention Program serves as a research and training center for work in Florida, sub-Saharan African, and the Caribbean—regions with some of the world’s highest rates of HIV/AIDS.

Prior to joining FIU, Dr. Malow was Director of Research and Training at the Addiction Research Center at the University of Miami/Jackson Medical Center, where he focused on conducting HIV/AIDS research with inner city minority drug abusing high risk populations.

Dr. Malow received over 25 federally-funded grants and published hundreds of HIV/AIDS-related studies mostly focused on socio-economically disadvantaged and/or minority drug abusing populations affected by HIV. He participated in over 150 scientific presentations in national and international meetings and was a reviewer and member of editorial boards of numerous scientific journals.

Since 1997, Dr. Malow maintained the HIV/AIDS Listserv, a digest of HIV literature and news items, distributed several times per week to approximately 5000 researchers nationwide.

He was honored with the “Unsung Hero” award during the 2006 U.S. Conference on AIDS and, in September 2012, FIU recognized his work with the Faculty Award for Excellence in Research.

To honor the legacy of Dr. Malow, a scholarship fund has been designated for a doctoral student in the Health Promotion & Disease Prevention program. The fund is managed by the FIU Foundation Inc., FIU’s official charitable organization and 501 (c) 3.
