Congratulation to Sheila Vakharia who successfully defended her doctoral dissertation on July 5, 2013.
Dr. Vakharia moved to Miami from New York City, where she was a licensed social worker, working with homeless people living with HIV/AIDS who had drug and alcohol problems. She started at FIU in August 2010 and graduated on August 5, 2013. Her dissertation is entitled “The influence of gender on perceived treatment need among a community sample of substance users.” The chair of her doctoral committee was Dr. Mark Macgowan.
On her graduation day, Dr. Vakharia accepted a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor at the Social Work Department of Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus. She started on September 1st and is primarily responsible for teaching courses related to the drug and alcohol specialization in their MSW program. In the long term, Dr. Vakharia would like to conduct intervention research with drug and alcohol users on the outcomes associated with harm reduction treatment approaches.
