The Robert Stempel College of Public Health and Social Work

Unique among the nation’s accredited schools of public health, the Robert Stempel College of Public Health and Social Work is distinguished by its interdisciplinary structure which combines the five major disciplines of public health in partnership with the disciplines of health care management, dietetics and nutrition, and social work. This intersection of disciplines enables faculty and students to explore and understand the connections among the social, biological, environmental, and cultural determinants of health and well-being. Embracing the diversity of South Florida, the School emphasizes the importance of cross-cultural understanding as a means of providing efficient and compassionate health services.

The College seeks to:

  • Educate and train future leaders, researchers, and health professionals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Conduct innovative research and translate that research into policy, program, and practice.
  • Promote healthy lives among the diverse communities of South Florida, especially the underserved and immigrants from the Caribbean and Latin America. Given the health inequalities faced by South Florida’s underserved communities, FIU’s College of Public Health and Social Work plays a critical role in preparing professionals to advocate for population-based policies and manage the diverse needs of our health care delivery systems.

The mission of the School of Social Work is to educate students for professional social work service and leadership in local, national, and international domains. The College collaborates with communities, conducts research, and disseminates knowledge in response to the needs of individuals and families living in diverse, urban environments. Emphasis is placed on achieving a comprehensive and community oriented understanding of the needs of an urban society faced with rapidly changing social, political, economic, and cultural conditions.

Ranked fourth in the nation in scholarly productivity, the College’s faculty members collaborate regularly with the College of Medicine and the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. The majority of graduates practice in health and mental health facilities throughout South Florida.
