Students of the Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work participated in the Florida International University Campus Walk for Suicide Prevention that took place on March 21, 2015. FIU was one of the universities in the country, where the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) Out of the Darkness Campus Walk was taking place. This was also a philanthropic event, in which the Stempel Public Health Association, the public health students’ club at FIU, was involved with. SPHA members participated in the walk and were also one of the fundraisers. Soumyadeep Mukherjee, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Epidemiology, was one of the top fundraisers from FIU; the list is available here.
Thanks to all the donors, participants and supporters, the event was a phenomenal success. FIU participated in this event for the first time and this is the only American Foundation for Suicide Prevention walk that took place in Miami. FIU as a whole, has raised more than $11,000, surpassing the goal of $5,000. The enthusiasm among the FIU community was infectious; students, staff and faculty were involved. FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg was one of the attendees of the event.
