Dear students, faculty and staff,

I am delighted to welcome you to a new semester at FIU Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work. Like you, I feel a wonderful sense of excitement and promise at this new beginning.

You are part of a vibrant community of like-minded people who each play a role in tackling the world’s shared challenges through applicable, solutions-oriented research. It is my great honor to join you in this important endeavor.

Almost two years ago, the academic departments that comprise FIU Stempel College came together for the first time in our home, here at AHC-5. I am confident that the next few years will bring us even closer together, for our College has special strengths. We have highly committed faculty and staff as well as an able student body. We also have a unique intersection of disciplines, which is essential to providing the perspective needed to identify and create the solutions that the world needs today. Together, we will continue to advance health and social welfare through excellence in education.

No dean can accomplish the significant growth of a college by himself. Only through a sustained spirit of shared enterprise will FIU Stempel College become all that we hope it will be. Success will be measured not by any personal achievements of mine, but rather by my ability to unite all parts of our College in a common effort to achieve important goals such as increasing our student retention and graduation rates, as well as increasing our commitment to faculty and staff support and development. These actions will serve to strengthen the framework needed to support FIU’s goal of elevating the University to the highest Carnegie classification.

In our eagerness to improve we should not forget to preserve the many good things FIU Stempel College already has. I include among these commitments to freedom of thought and expression, honesty, integrity and fairness, and a sympathetic interest in each other as human beings—because although research and metrics are vital to our College’s growth, we should never forget that helping people should continue to be at the core of everything that FIU Stempel College does.

As we expand FIU Stempel College’s vision for the future, I am energized by the opportunity to meet a fundamental goal among institutions of higher learning: to take high-quality education to new frontiers. I look forward to our future together and all that we will accomplish.

Tomás R. Guilarte, Ph.D.
