Each year, the FIU Council of Student Organizations (CSO) recognizes the best undergraduate and graduate student organizations at FIU. This year, the FIU CSO recognized the Stempel Public Health Organization (SPHA) as the Outstanding Organization in the Graduate Student Organization Community for 2015-16.
The SPHA provides graduate public health students at FIU with educational and service opportunities, on and off campus, which help them reach their academic and professional goals while fostering a sense of community among all students at FIU Stempel College. This year, Michael Delgado, M.P.H., SPHA president, worked with the SPHA e-board and professor Dr. Vukosava Pekovic, SPHA faculty advisor, on numerous SPHA activities deserving of the CSO award.
- SPHA partnered with United Way to administer over 500 flu vaccines to underserved residents of Miami-Dade County
- members distributed free condoms to FIU students to encourage safe sex
- the organization raised nearly $1,000 for the American Cancer Society as part of Relay for Life
- hosted and coordinated several special guest lectures throughout the year to introduce members to various aspects of the field of public health
Most recently, the SPHA co-sponsored the Regional South Florida Public Health Association Conference held at FIU-Biscayne Bay Campus on April 27. The conference brought together public health professionals, faculty and students from across South Florida, and several SPHA members had poster or oral presentations.
