Mark Macgowan, M.S.W., Ph.D., L.C.S.W. has been appointed as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for the Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work, effective immediately. Dr. Macgowan has had a distinguished career as an educator in the School of Social Work, and has received multiple professional and university awards for excellence in teaching and research. He held the Fulbright-Scotland Visiting Professorship at the University of Edinburgh, where he was engaged in teaching and research about global perspectives on evidence-based group work. As a licensed therapist and supervisor of therapist trainees, he has significant clinical experience, including work with persons with substance use problems and those affected by disasters. He currently serves as a mental and behavioral health specialist with federal, state and local government disaster response medical teams.
Since his appointment as Interim Associate Dean of Academic Affairs in February 2016, Dr. Macgowan has shown to be an effective leader, working with others to help achieve academic and research excellence through a culture of engagement, mutual respect, and inclusion. He recently led the committee to identify the Director of the Office of Student and Alumni Affairs and is providing leadership in the early process of accreditation of Public Health. He also created a process for promoting research faculty funded by grants, supported faculty governance to work optimally, and is setting structures and processes in place for the college and units to monitor and respond to changes in the FIU Beyond Possible 2020 metrics.
