School of Social Work professor inaugurated into FIU's Presidential Leadership Program

Presidential Leadership ProgramDr. Shanna Burke, an assistant professor in the School of Social Work, was selected to participate in the third cohort of the Presidential Leadership Program.

Moderated by President Mark B. Rosenberg and Dr. Brenezza DaParre Garcia, associate vice president of Institutional Relations, the professional development program was created for individuals who have demonstrated a strong affiliation with FIU, as well as a solid commitment to higher education and to their profession.

Dr. Burke was selected to join the program in conjunction with 31 FIU faculty and staff members across the university who have expressed their motivation and drive toward administration and academic functions in higher education.

The program, which serves to broaden participants’ leadership commitments, will allow Dr. Burke to build onto her established record of meaningful leadership by learning from administrators, scholars and peers.

“I am excited to meet other professionals and learn more about FIU and the community it serves and works in collaboration with,” said Dr. Burke.

During the 2018-2019 academic year, each participant will attend four sessions that provide information on the history of FIU, its role within neighboring communities and its future visions. This will allow participants to understand how the university governance and its functions in the community and the state.

The sessions consist of:

    • Opening Networker (June 12, 2018)
    • Session 1: Miami – See it like a native (July 27, 2018)
    • Session 2: FIU – Evolution and lessons learned (October 12, 2018)
    • Holiday Gathering (December 19, 2018)
    • Session 3: The State University System – A many splendored thing (January 18, 2019)
    • Session 4: Higher Education in the next two decades (April 19, 2019)
    • Closing Reception (May 22, 2019)
Dr. Burke will also attend four different cohort experiential learning activities comprised of networking events, experiences showcasing Miami’s community, functions on campus and governance meetings, such as the Board of Governor’s meeting, which will provide her with insight within university operations.

The Presidential Leadership Program will give Dr. Burke an unparalleled opportunity to assess and analyze the opportunities and challenges FIU will encounter in the forthcoming years.
