Hear it from our students: Ph.D. in Health Disparities

The Ph.D. in Public Health with a concentration in Health Disparities trains the next generation of health disparities researchers to be acutely aware of the social and cultural determinants of health. Students learn about the root of the high rates of HIV, substance abuse and obesity that are present in disadvantaged African American, Latino, Haitian and other underserved communities in South Florida, Latin America and the Caribbean region. The program’s multidisciplinary curriculum equips students to conduct health disparities research that will provide valuable information to public health care providers and policymakers with the goal of developing effective interventions that lead to reductions in health disparities in these populations.

Multidisciplinary faculty with a wide range of expertise in the field of health disparities will engage doctoral candidates in learning about the complexities of health disparities. They will promote the use of interdisciplinary methods and innovative approaches in research, community action and /or public health practice with minority and underserved populations.

Students will graduate ready to work in academic or research setting as post-doctoral fellows and faculty in local and state health departments, federal government, hospitals and international health organizations.
