Dr. Kim Tieu, chair of the department of Environmental Health Sciences, has been invited to serve as a member of the Neural Oxidative Metabolism and Death Study Section for the Center for Scientific Review.
In this role, Tieu will have a unique opportunity to contribute to the national biomedical research effort. Study sections review grant applications submitted to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), make recommendations on these applications to the appropriate NIH national advisory council or board and survey the status of research in their fields of science. These functions are of great value to medical and allied research in this country
According to Dr. Noni Byrnes, director of the Center for Scientific Review, “Members are selected on the basis of their demonstrated competence and achievement in their scientific discipline as evidenced by the quality of research accomplishments, publications in scientific journals, and other significant scientific activities, achievements and honors. Service on a study section also requires mature judgment and objectivity as well as the ability to work effectively in a group, qualities we believe Dr. Tieu will bring to this important task.” His term will be from July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2024.
“Although this role will require a major commitment of time and energy, it is an honor and privilege to be invited to serve on this expert panel to help make important funding decisions. This is also an excellent opportunity for me to interact with other fellow scientists and to learn more about the latest cutting-edge research being conducted elsewhere,” Tieu said.
