Tomás R. Guilarte, dean of the Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work and professor in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences, will be inducted into the Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine of Florida (ASEMF) on November 7, 2020. 
“It is an honor to be recognized by this esteemed organization,” Guilarte said. “I look forward to working with colleagues throughout the state on initiatives that can better the future of our Florida communities.”
Guilarte was selected for his long-standing record of excellence in research studying the impact of environmental pollutants on neurodegenerative and mental disease. In the letter from the Academy it was noted that his selection was based on “seminal research on environmental pollutants effects on brain development and their role in neurodegenerative diseases.”
Michael Heithaus, dean of the FIU College of Arts, Science, and Education and inaugural board member of ASEMF nominated Guilarte to the Academy.
Established in 2018, the aim of the Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine of Florida is to expand Florida’s reputation as a national and international leader in science, engineering and medicine and help advance the next generation of researchers and educators. Members of the academy engage in discussions about how to address global challenges, particularly as they affect the State of Florida.
